“Hi there! You must be new! I’m Diana nice to meet you!” I turned around to see that it was an attractive Chinese woman who was speaking to me in PERFECT ENGLISH!! Up until now everyone that I’d met had a thick Cantonese accent, so it came as a surprise to hear “American English”
“Uh…hi! I’m Allen, nice to meet you, you’re English is really good!” I blurted out, a little caught off guard.
“So is yours!” she said with a laugh.
“Where are you from?”
“San Francisco, you?”
“Wow! That’s great, let’s grab a seat, I think lunch’ll be starting soon!” Diana and I ended up sitting next to each other at one table alone with Brad, Exy, Paul, Jackie’s hair and make-up people and some of the AD’s and PA’s. Jackie, Willie, Solon, Dorothy, the director and a few others I hadn’t yet met were at the other table.
I didn’t know what to expect, I mean what kind of exotic foods does Jackie Chan eat?! I was half expecting like a lobster wrapped in a steak sprinkled with unicorn dust! But to my relief it was a typical dim sum meal! Few! Many of the dishes I was familiar with. There was your standard ha gow, siu mai, luo mei gai, pai gu, and cha siu bou (pork dumplings, shrimp dumplings, sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf, pork ribs, and barbeque pork buns), but there was also this new dish I’d never tried of seen before which I fell instantly in love with! It was this fried sticky dumpling with pork and shrimp inside – it doesn’t sound like anything special, but the dough had a slightly sweet texture to it that made it taste soo good! Every since then I’ve always ordered that item at dim sum!
I ate conservatively, letting everyone else first take what they wanted before taking for myself. I was still really shy, being in a new environment and all, but Diana made me feel comfortable and it was nice having someone who could speak English normally to talk to.
“So what do you do for Jackie?” I asked her.
“I’m Jackie’s dialogue coach, I help him with all his dialogue,” she looked up over at him to see if he was looking her way, “he sometimes needs a little help with his lines, if you know what I mean!” we both laughed.
