“That’s pretty cool! How did Jackie find you?” I expected her to tell me that she was an English teacher who Jackie’s people dug up with the highest of credentials like multiple Ph. D’s. in English and Chinese and years of teaching English to various stars in Hong Kong etc. etc. etc. but instead, this was what she said:
“Actually it’s quite a story! My agent submitted me for a part in Rush Hour,”
“Hold on, you’re an actress?”
“Yep!” so much for the multiple Ph. D’s I thought. She continued, “but before I had the opportunity to audition, the role was cut.”
“Awwww…”
“But because I had a B.A. in English literature,” so she did have some credentials, “they asked me to come in and interview for a dialogue coach position,”
“Cool!”
“I had coached a few friends before in acting before, but I’ve never really been a dialogue coach. So I went in for the interview not knowing what to expect or who was interviewing me, and guess what?”
“What?!”
“I walked into the room and there was Jackie and Brett Ratner sitting there!”
“Brett Ratner?”
“The director,”
“Holy smokes! You must’ve been peeing yourself!”
“I nearly was! Anyhow, I sat down and they asked me a few questions. I didn’t feel like I did that great of a job answering them. Jackie kept turning away and ignoring me to talk to the director about ideas for the movie. Then, out of nowhere he said I could leave,”
“Huh? Just like that?”
“Yep, I barely said a word! So I got up to leave, but before I left I thought I should say something memorable, so I turned and added my feedback to what Jackie was saying and left.”
“So then what happened?!”
“Well I went home both sad and excited at the fact I met Jackie Chan but didn’t do too well in the interview. I was on the phone making some plans with a friend when I got a call on the other line. It was Jackie’s people telling me I got the job!”
“What!? Just like that?? That’s incredible! You must’ve been jumping for joy!”
“I was! I couldn’t believe that they wanted me for the job based on the interview! I hardly said a thing! I hung up the phone, totally forgetting that my friend was on the other line. I was in shock, I mean, for the next few months I was going to working closely with Jackie Chan on a feature movie! My friend called back right away which snapped me out of my trance and I blurted out everything! I think they were in more shock than me!”
